What is SoM?

What is a System on Module?

Toradex System on Module structure

A System on Module (SoM), sometimes a Computer on Module (CoM), puts the processor, the memory and the main I/O onto one small board — an embedded computing module.

The OS, drivers and board support package come with it.
Change the carrier board only, and one module serves several products.

With a proven module underneath, you can put your effort into the application that matters —
and carry less hardware risk and less delay.

Benefits

What a System on Module gives you

A System on Module combined with a custom carrier board

SoM plus a custom carrier board

The product is built from a commercial SoM and a carrier board.
OCUBE takes on the board design and the Linux and Qt interface as well.

Faster to market

No base hardware redesign — effort goes to the application,
launch comes sooner

A proven starting point

A commercial module already proven, so there is less new hardware
to design and verify

Newer silicon when you want it

Modules with newer processors and memory let performance
grow in steps

Lower development cost

Less custom board to design means less cost
across the project

Why Toradex

Why Toradex

Performance, engineering support, long-term supply and upkeep considered together —
the range and support hold well past production.

Built for industrial conditions

Industrial temperature, vibration and humidity —
the exact grade and approvals depend on the product

Room in the family

Choosing a compatible model in the same family means
less carrier board to redesign

Lifecycle and upkeep

Long-term supply, with a process for changes and defects —
the term and scope depend on the product

Making use of the hardware

Boot optimisation, GPU, cryptographic acceleration
and 3D rendering, all put to use

Development environment

Board support package, GPIO, display configuration
and system monitoring tools

Engineering support

Toradex documentation and global support, with OCUBE
as first-line engineering support in Korea
